Chapter I

A land the world is only beginning to taste

Moldova has made wine for some seven thousand years and has more vineyard per person than any country on earth. Yet few people have tasted it.

On the Moldovan bank of the Prut, in the village of Gherman, the Pfanner family set out to change that. The vines grow at the edge of the Codru, Moldova’s forested heartland and its largest wine region, surrounded by apple orchards. We keep what the place gives: the cool breath of the forest, the freshness of the orchard, fully ripe grapes.
